Marta Kochanek shows scenes of everyday life from many years ago. As inspiration, she uses photographs from her family album, press photos, old advertisements and stills from old films. She likes tomix the reality from the 1950s-1970s with the present. Her references to the past are a deliberate gesture and an expression of longing. Back then, life used to be slower, there was more time for friendships, family and fun. Nowadays, it’s more and more difficult to find inner peace and quiet, to find one's own intimate world.
The artist opposes the negative influence of the media. Through her art, she tries to provide viewers with positive feelings. She has chosen a style close to pop art. Her paintings are reminiscent of colouring books for the youngest.
In Marta Kochanek's work, everyday events require no commentary. Most of the scenes involve groups of people. Their figures are outlined with a precise, thin line. Most of the canvas surface remains white, untouched by the brush. Only selected sections are covered with flatly placed colours. Is the artist exhibiting unfinished works? No, this is a conscious effort. On the white, unpainted fields we see numbers, and these numbers are subordinated to colours. The empty spaces await the intervention of the viewer, inviting his or her imagination to participate.
Marta Kochanek's seemingly simple and easy art has nothing naive or infantile about it. It exudes warmth, humour and a pleasant sens of nostalgia, as well as the charm of a bygone age. It also impresses with its visual qualities - excellent drawing and superbly composed frames.
